Winner of the European Publishers Award for Photography 2009, of the Leica Prize (2004) and of the Niépce Prize, main French prize in photography, (2000), Klavdij Sluban is a French photographer of Slovenian origin born in Paris on 3.3.63.
He develops a rigorous and coherent body of work, never inspired by immediate and sensational current affairs, making him one of the most interesting photographers in so –called “author-photography”. The Balkans, the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Caribbean, Central America, Russia and China can be read as many successive steps of an in-depth study of a patient proximity to the encountered real. His images are on show in such leading institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Photography of Tokyo, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, the Museum of Photography in Helsinki, the Fine Arts Museum in Canton…
His many books include Entre Parenthèses, (Photo Poche, Actes Sud), Transverses, (Maison Européenne de la Photographie) and Balkans -Transit, with a text by François Maspero (Le Seuil).
Since 1995, Sluban runs photography workshops with young offenders in prison. First originated in France, in the prison of Fleury-Mérogis with support from Henri Cartier-Bresson, Marc Riboud and William Klein, this commitment was pursued in the disciplinary camps and prisons of Eastern Europe –Serbia, Slovenia, Ukraine, Georgia, Moldavia, Latvia – and in the disciplinary centres of Moscow and St Petersburg, and lately in Ireland and Central America (Guatemala and Salvador).

Work in Prisons
In 1995, Klavdij Sluban created a photography workshop for teenagers in the Juvenile Detention Centre
in Fleury-Mérogis (South of Paris, the biggest jail in Europe). The adolescents were taught a creative approach,
development and printing in photography. Their work was regularly shown inside the jail. Photographer
Henri Cartier-Bresson attended several times a year from the beginning of the project, as did photographers
William Klein and Marc Riboud who also attended to encourage the participating adolescents.
From 1998 to 2004, following these projects, K.Sluban started working with young prisoners in the former
Soviet-Union (Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, Latvia), with similar photographic exchange.
In 2000, he created another photography workshop in Celje, Slovenia, in the only national prison for teenagers.
In 2006, K. Sluban created new photography workshops at Saint-Patrick’s Institution, Dublin, Ireland.
Since 2007, he has been working with teenagers from gangs (“maras”) in Central America: in Zona 18 and
Chimaltenango jails in Guatemala and in Izalco and Tonacatepeque jails in Salvador.

Klavdij Sluban est un photographe français d’origine slovène, né à Paris le 3.3.1963. Il est lauréat du prix EPAP, European Publishers Award for Photography 2009, avec publication cet automne du livre “Transsibériades” simultanément dans six pays d’Europe, du prix Leica (2004) ainsi que du prix Niepce (2000).
Sluban mène une œuvre personnelle rigoureuse et cohérente, ce qui en fait un des photographes-auteurs les plus intéressants de sa génération. Souvent empreints de références littéraires, ses nombreux voyages photographiques se situent en marge de l’actualité chaude et immédiate. La mer Noire, les Caraïbes, les Balkans, la Russie, la Chine… peuvent se lire chez lui comme une rencontre entre la réalité du moment et le sentiment intérieur du photographe dromomane. Ses noirs profonds, ses silhouettes à contre-jour confèrent à son écriture photographique une droiture et une justesse exemptes de tout didactisme ou exotisme.
Depuis 1995, Klavdij Sluban, quand il ne voyage pas, anime des ateliers photographiques auprès de jeunes détenus. Cet engagement commencé en France (Fleury-Mérogis) avec le soutien d’Henri Cartier-Bresson, Marc Riboud et William Klein, s’est poursuivi dans les camps disciplinaires des pays de l’Est, en ex-Yougoslavie (Slovénie, Serbie) et en ex-Union Soviétique (Ukraine, Géorgie, Moldavie, Lettonie, Russie), y compris dans les enceintes disciplinaires de Moscou et de Saint-Pétersbourg et plus récemment en Amérique centrale. Familier des lieux de la détention et partenaire des acteurs qui les peuplent, Sluban déploie au travers de ses images la problématique des espaces clos et des horizons contraints et nous fait éprouver les fractures d’un enfermement que redouble l’intériorisation des perceptions.
Les travaux de Klavdij Sluban sont exposés dans les institutions les plus prestigieuses du monde, notamment ces dernières années au Musée de la Photographie à Helsinki, au Musée des Beaux-arts de Canton, au Metropolitan Museum of Photography de Tokyo, au Musée d’Art Moderne de Guatemala City, à la Maison Européenne de la Photographie et au Centre Pompidou/Beaubourg, à Paris. Il a publié de nombreux ouvrages dont Entre Parenthèses, Photo Poche, (Ed. Actes Sud ), Transverses (Ed. Maison Européenne de la Photographie) et Balkans Transit, texte de François Maspero, (Ed. du Seuil).

Klavdij Sluban ist französischer Fotograf slowenischer Abstammung, geboren wurde er am 3. März 1863 in Paris. Der Künstler ist der sechzehnte Preisträger des EPAP 2009, außerdem Gewinner des 2004 Leica-Preises und des Prix Niépce 2000, letzterer Frankreichs bedeutendste Auszeichnung für Fotofrafen.
Sluban entwickelte seine Arbeit, rigoroser und kohärenter Natur, ohne sich jemals aktuellen sensationsgierenden und Aufmerksamkeit haschenden Meldungen hingegeben zu haben. Diese Tatsache macht ihn zu einem der interessantesten Akteure der sogenannten „author-photography“.
So können der Balkan, das Schwarze Meer, die Karibik, Zentralamerika, Russland und China als aufeinanderfolgende Schritte hin zu einem tieferen Verständnis des eigenen Wesens gegenüber der Realität verstanden werden.
Slubans Werke besiedeln führende Einrichtungen wie unter anderem das Tokioter Metropolitan Museum of Photography, das Pariser Maison Européene de la Photographie und das Museum of Photography in Helsinki.
Publikationen umfassen etwa „Entre Parenthèses“, „Transverses“ und „Balkans – Transit“.
Seit 1995 leitet Sluban Fotografie-Workshops für Gefängnisinsassen, zuerst im französischen Gefängnis Fleury-Mérogis, unterstützt durch Henri Cartier-Bresson, Marc Riboud und William Klein. Dieses Engagement führte der Künstler ebenfalls in Disziplinanstalten und Gefängnissen in Osteuropa weiter – in Serbien, Slowenien, Georgien, Moldawien, Lettland und der Ukraine, auch in Moskowiter und St. Petersburger Anstalten, aktuell sogar in Irland, Guatemala und Salvador.

La mer Noire, les Caraïbes, les Balkans, la Russie, la Chine… peuvent se lire chez lui comme une rencontre entre la réalité du moment et le sentiment intérieur du photographe dromomane. Ses noirs profonds, ses silhouettes à contre-jour confèrent à son écriture photographique une droiture et une justesse exemptes de tout didactisme ou exotisme.
Depuis 1995, Klavdij Sluban, quand il ne voyage pas, anime des ateliers photographiques auprès de jeunes détenus. Cet engagement commencé en France (Fleury-Mérogis) avec le soutien d’Henri Cartier-Bresson, Marc Riboud et William Klein, s’est poursuivi dans les camps disciplinaires des pays de l’Est, en ex-Yougoslavie (Slovénie, Serbie) et en ex-Union Soviétique (Ukraine, Géorgie, Moldavie, Lettonie, Russie), y compris dans les enceintes disciplinaires de Moscou et de Saint-Pétersbourg et plus récemment en Amérique centrale. Familier des lieux de la détention et partenaire des acteurs qui les peuplent, Sluban déploie au travers de ses images la problématique des espaces clos et des horizons contraints et nous fait éprouver les fractures d’un enfermement que redouble l’intériorisation des perceptions.
Les travaux de Klavdij Sluban sont exposés dans les institutions les plus prestigieuses du monde, notamment ces dernières années au Musée de la Photographie à Helsinki, au Musée des Beaux-arts de Canton, au Metropolitan Museum of Photography de Tokyo, au Musée d’Art Moderne de Guatemala City, à la Maison Européenne de la Photographie et au Centre Pompidou/Beaubourg, à Paris. Il a publié de nombreux ouvrages dont Entre Parenthèses, Photo Poche, (Ed. Actes Sud ), Transverses (Ed. Maison Européenne de la Photographie) et Balkans Transit, texte de François Maspero, (Ed. du Seuil).

Klavdij Sluban ist französischer Fotograf slowenischer Abstammung, geboren wurde er am 3. März 1863 in Paris. Der Künstler ist der sechzehnte Preisträger des EPAP 2009, außerdem Gewinner des 2004 Leica-Preises und des Prix Niépce 2000, letzterer Frankreichs bedeutendste Auszeichnung für Fotofrafen.
Sluban entwickelte seine Arbeit, rigoroser und kohärenter Natur, ohne sich jemals aktuellen sensationsgierenden und Aufmerksamkeit haschenden Meldungen hingegeben zu haben. Diese Tatsache macht ihn zu einem der interessantesten Akteure der sogenannten „author-photography“.
So können der Balkan, das Schwarze Meer, die Karibik, Zentralamerika, Russland und China als aufeinanderfolgende Schritte hin zu einem tieferen Verständnis des eigenen Wesens gegenüber der Realität verstanden werden.
Slubans Werke besiedeln führende Einrichtungen wie unter anderem das Tokioter Metropolitan Museum of Photography, das Pariser Maison Européene de la Photographie und das Museum of Photography in Helsinki.
Publikationen umfassen etwa „Entre Parenthèses“, „Transverses“ und „Balkans – Transit“.
Seit 1995 leitet Sluban Fotografie-Workshops für Gefängnisinsassen, zuerst im französischen Gefängnis Fleury-Mérogis, unterstützt durch Henri Cartier-Bresson, Marc Riboud und William Klein. Dieses Engagement führte der Künstler ebenfalls in Disziplinanstalten und Gefängnissen in Osteuropa weiter – in Serbien, Slowenien, Georgien, Moldawien, Lettland und der Ukraine, auch in Moskowiter und St. Petersburger Anstalten, aktuell sogar in Irland, Guatemala und Salvador.
